I am a rational, logical, person. I had been with my common law husband for 13 years. We have three wonderful, young boys. 12, 8 and 2. Each of them love their father and hang on his every word. Between us, we make a good living, bought a home, two cars, a cat and a dog. Both very much respected in the community and among our friends and family. A good life.

So, obviously, he cheated on me. A few years ago his best friend, having just broke up with his long term girlfriend, starts to chat a new girl up. The girl has a known reputation for sleeping around. She has an 8 year old son, and doesn’t work; prefers to rely on welfare to provide for both of them. (8 years of making a life for herself this way) Upon meeting this girl, I did eventually have a conversation warning our friend that she probably wasn’t the sort of person he would be happy with long term. I don’t consider this meddling, he was in a bad way, and I was concerned about him. They did proceed to try to have a relationship, but after a few months this fizzled out on its own.

She played softball on my husband’s team, every Sunday. His best friend and most of our male friends play on the same team. It was a known fact that she went on to sleep with another teammate and friend in a casual relationship. I have never commented on this.

This past summer she began, to flirt with and approach my husband. He’s an ass to consider an affair, a complete douche bag for acting on it, but he did. He would drive her around when she claimed to have had too much to drink after the games, etc. I was mostly at home with the boys waiting for him to come home so we could run errands, or do something fun with the boys. I was unaware.

They arranged to drive to his place of work and spent an afternoon there doing whatever they felt they should. Then again on an evening where my husband encouraged me to go for drinks with friends (July 17th, 2010), she drove over to my home and had sex with him in the back of her borrowed roommate’s van in the parking lot of my complex while my three small children slept upstairs.

After the lies came clear, and I knew who she was (November 20th, 2010)– I spoke with her on the phone and she tells me that I made it easy for her to not care about my family because I ruined her relationship with my husband’s best friend.
I’m floored. My children are hurt, their grades are suffering, I’m on anti-depressants, and I drink way too much. I know this isn’t healthy.

I can’t beat her to a pulp. I can’t touch her, or anything that belongs to her. Can’t sue her for anything, it’s not illegal what they did. There really ought to be a law for poisonous people. The way I figure it – she struck out first, but I somehow have to accept that people like her can do whatever they want, purposely and with malicious intent and there is no law, no consequence for their actions. This is fundamentally wrong. I have a hard time seeing the lesson in this. What am I supposed to teach my children, or what am I supposed to feel about a world where there is no consequence for destroying lives like this?

We live in Mississauga , Ontario ( Canada ) – her name is Melanie Broadbent and this is how she presents herself on her Facebook profile since my one and only conversation with her on this. I suppose she’s proud of herself. Wants to show the world how strong she is. Posting on her wall that everyone is calling her a homewrecker and not giving her a chance to explain. If it smells like shit – in my opinion, it is. No explanation necessary.
